The village as it exists at present is large and well built, delightfullysituated in a beautiful valley on the north bank of the Tyne, on a gentleslope towards the south, with it’s gardens dipping into the river and issheltered from the chill blasts of the north by high hills; on the southat the distance of half a mile, rises a hill of considerable altitude, the sides of which are studded with beautiful villa residences andordinary dwelling houses; on the top of the hill is a beautiful littlemansion and a farm stead, lately erected by Joseph Temperley, Esq., whofor several years purchased from time to time considerable portions ofland, part of which was under cultivation, other portions uncultivatedbeing covered with whins and heather, which by his energy, skill, andliberal purse was soon brought into a high state of cultivation.
